Why Study Geography?
“In his book Why Geography Matters, the geographer Harm de Blij argues that the West’s three great challenges of our time—Islamist terrorism, global warming, and the rise of China—are all problems of geography. An informed citizenry has to understand place, not because place is more important than other kinds of knowledge but because it forms the foundation for so much other knowledge.”

- Ongoing Wars- What role do you think the USA should have in fighting the “War on Terror” today?
- Immigration- How do you think 9/11 might have impacted the immigration question in the USA? What do you think US Immigration policy should be?
- Airport Security- Do you think airport security is strict enough now? What changes do you think should be made?
- Surveillance- - Privacy is one of the major issues confronting Americans. What restrictions (if any) do you think should be placed on the government’s ability to survey the American people? Do you think that the government should have free access to people's phones?

You can always do the minimum required to receive assignment credit but understand that your participation grade for the class based on the level that you commit to assignments.
An example of a great comment on a map:
Map 22- Best Countries to Be a Mother
This was an interesting map because I noticed that the U.S. was not at the top of best places to be a mother and was curious as to why. After reading the linking article I learned that it is because the U.S. has a large amount of inequality. The highest earning mothers have great health care but I was amazed by the following quote from that article "the overall U.S. average is on par with that of some post-Soviet Eastern European countries." I think that the U.S. needs to work on providing health care to all mothers equally.
One statistic that was interesting from the same article was that:"In India, 309,300 babies die every year within 24 hours of birth". That is over 800 a day. We talk a lot about their population growing and I had never heard that so many babies were dying. We need to control the population but not with bad healthcare leading to so many deaths.
